About Ierapetra

Ierapetra is the fourth largest city of Crete and the southernmost major economic and political center of Greece. It is also the largest populated city of the Lasithi Prefecture. In the last decade Ierapetra has become one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete because of its award-winning beaches (2nd European Beach Award), and is known for its intense nightlife, which starts at the beach bars and ends at the bars in the narrow streets of the city. During the summer months, many cultural events (kirbia) such as concerts and theater performances are held.

The city of Chania

The foundation of the Ierapetra was lost in the mythical years, when the Korivants, who came to Ierapytna from Rhodes, founded it. The town is located on the site of the ancient city of Ierapytna in southeastern Crete. Previous names of Ierapytna were Kyrba (from its first settler who had the same name), Kamiros, Pytna (hill) and were one of the most important cities of Crete, especially during the Roman period. The site of ancient Ierapytna, which was destroyed (presumably by the earthquake of 796), was one kilometer from the present town of Viglia.
